Without a strong relationship with local employers, workforce programs can’t succeed. That’s because performance is driven by placements and wages, and both are “employer-centered.”
The Business and Employer Services Professional (BESP) is the connecting point between a program and local employers. The BESP is also the touchstone between workforce development and economic development, and they can even have an impact on community development.
We like to tell people that the best way to get what you want is to give others what they want first. Employers will give you the placements you want, but only after they know you’re there for them on their team! Successful placements are NOT the result of “good salesmanship” but instead, come as a result of good service.
The BESP course is a 40-hour, moderated learning experience. It includes both face-to-face training and individual learning activities completed online and with a workbook. At the heart of the course is a vision for some really creative approaches to designing new services that make a lasting impression on local employers.
The course covers the following key topics:
Learners will also have the opportunity to do an “independent study” project focusing on specific skills of interest to them. This special activity goes above and beyond the normal workload to make a special contribution to the local program. The program benefits while team members learn to better serve local employers and build lasting relationship! It’s really is win-win-win!

“I liked how the workbook emphasized building relationships. Marketing is one of the most vital roles, especially being a BESP.”
“To be able to provide this information and be familiar with it has been a valuable asset when approaching employers. I think it is very useful for small businesses who don’t normally have an HR function to refer to for vital information.”
“I have been a HR professional for many years and did not know some of these websites existed. If a Business and Employer Services Professional came to me and showed me all these resources, I would be forever indebted to that person. Just incredible information!”
